And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

This scholar had come to trap Jesus. The big question is "How can I be sure I have eternal life?" It's the question of all time. For the scholar, it is "What do I need to do?" If it's "doing", then just perfectly love God and others, and you have it made. But, as Jesus will show, eternal life is knowing God, and to know Him is to love Him, and if we truly love Him (as the apostle John says), it will show by our love for one another. If you think you can do it all on your own, go for it. But if you are wise enough to realize you cannot, keep on listening...
