Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1 ESV)
Here, almost half way through Luke's gospel, we find a short request that will make a big difference in the lives of the disciples. They have seen Jesus do this over and over again, and each time, things happen. Rather than simply try to imitate Jesus in their own wisdom, they ask Him something - that is something they were often afraid to do: ask. That, in itself is a lesson on prayer: don't be afraid to ask. Jesus is more than willing to answer; it's as if He has been waiting for them to ask. He still is today.
