Songs of Renewal #8

PSALM 87:
On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
2     the Lord loves the gates of Zion
    more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 Glorious things of you are spoken,
    O city of God. Selah
4 Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;
    behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush—
    “This one was born there,” they say.
5 And of Zion it shall be said,
    “This one and that one were born in her”;
    for the Most High himself will establish her.
6 The Lord records as he registers the peoples,
    “This one was born there.” Selah
7 Singers and dancers alike say,
    “All my springs are in you
.”
Can you tell how much the psalmist loved Jerusalem, Zion, the city of God?  Even though established as the capital of Israel and home of the Temple late in history compared to these other cities, he saw her as the source, the home from where life flows.  What was different about Jerusalem? It was the place where the worship of the true and living God took place. God had chosen there, so there is the place from which all life flows.  Since it is a city on a mount, springs of water literally ran from there into the surrounding valleys. In a same way, since God dwelt there, the water of spiritual life flowed from there. As you seek for renewal, there is nowhere better to turn than the worship of the true and living God. Life comes from worshipping Him.  Make sure you do so today.
