Songs of Renewal #27

Psalm 97
1 The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice;
    let the many coastlands be glad!
2 Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire goes before him
    and burns up his adversaries all around.
4 His lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all the peoples see his glory
.
Just how do you express this simple truth: "The Lord Reigns"? Since we cannot see into heaven, except the few glimpses given in scripture, we can only see things from "the under side": clouds and darkness, fire and lightning, earthquakes and volcanoes, and the glories of the skies after all the storms and great displays of what insurance adjusters call "acts of God" have gone. The earth still holds together and spins; His eyes and hands are watching over it.  The shorelines still hold the waters in place, while we watch a beautiful sunset.  We can rest at night knowing: The Lord reigns
