Getting to Know Jesus by Name #2: ALMIGHTY

 

7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. 8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Sometimes a name or characteristic is emphasized by placing it at the beginning of the statement, while others it is done so in a more dramatic fashion by putting it at the end. That is the case here. We will be looking at other names of Jesus in this passage later, but the one today is the last word: ALMIGHTY. Often, scribes and translators would put it in all capital letters to emphasize His greatness over all. The term means: "having absolute power over all, possessing relatively unlimited power, regarded as having greatest importance."* This name is emphasized in the context by the fact that when Christ returns, every eye will see Him and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. The final phrase right before this name emphasizes that He is the greatest before, during, and after all time. He is the greatest of all, over all, and for all time.
