The Walls Cry Out...

“Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house,
    to set his nest on high,
    to be safe from the reach of harm!
10 You have devised shame for your house
    by cutting off many peoples;
    you have forfeited your life.
11 For the stone will cry out from the wall,
    and the beam from the woodwork respond.

(Habakkuk 2: 9-11)
Through the ages, the Babylonians, and other empires, had a practice of plundering the places they defeated. They especially took thing like the gold that decorated palaces and temples, but they also took timbers and even stones, hauling them all they way home for their "interior decorating projects." It may sound crazy to us with Home depot around the corner, but for them it was a real thing.  It was also merciless and heartless, as it robbed those people of everything that make them safe, secure, and comfortable in their own homes. As stated yesterday, we must not simply wait and hope for "them to get theirs", but we also need to examine ourselves for similar attitudes, motives and actions.  How do we invest so much in our homes, and put all our security there, to the neglect of trusting God, forgetting that the "Son of Man" had "no place to lay His head" - that those things are things to be thankful for, and find some sense of sanctuary in, but not to the extreme "fortress" mentality that we will be more safe there than wherever God leads us.  May He be our Nest on High.
