18 “What profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes speechless idols!
19 Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
and there is no breath at all in it.
20 But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.”
(Habakkuk 2)
As I shared in Sunday's sermon, "the prophets are at their best when they expose the insanity of worshipping idols. (For another good slant on idolatry, see my daily email devotional by Rob Still. He makes a good point.) Idols are made by man, and are dead, speechless, mindless, and wrongly raised to a position they do not deserve. The same is true whether they are wood or flesh and blood. They may look good, desireable, and worthy, but they really are not. The only One that is is not here on earth: He is in heaven, on His throne. And He is speaking. Are we being quiet enough to listen, to learn, to love, to lean on Him, to live for Him? Take some time today to "be silent before Him."
