1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
John makes it clear that God has not just loved us in response to our love or faith to Him. He loved first and foremost. Our love is responsive to Him. But how can we practically love Him back? In the context of this letter, it is wanting to please Him by our obedience. And what is the most tangible way we can obey Him? Keep His commandment to love one another, by reflecting and repeating His sacrificial kind of love. This is the only reasonable response we can have to such a great love.
