A John 3:16 kind of love...

1 John 3:16-18 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
It has often been pointed out that I John 3:16, like John 3:16, points us to the love of God in Christ.  In the Gospel of John, It is God's love demonstrated in His doing something as He looked upon us in our need for a Savior.  Here, it is God's directive about how we are to show the same kind of love to fellow believers we see in need.  We are not just to give to those needs in a practical way; we are to have the same heart of compassion toward them, and give them what Christ gave us - His time and work.  We are to sacrifice a part of us for one another.
