1 John 2:28-29 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
Abiding - living daily in fellowship with God and with His Son, Jesus Christ. That is the life we are to be living now. When we do, we will have no fear of Christ's return; we will more than "hope" that we will spend eternity with Him and the Father. We live righteously, in right relationship with God, His Word, and His will, because we know that Christ is our righteousness - that the only way we will be able to stand before God is not how righteous or perfect we are, but how righteous He is. We do not enter eternity with God because we have perfectly practiced (lived) righteously, but we practice (live out) right living because we believe that Christ and Christ alone is righteous, and He is our way to a relationship with, and being able to stand before, Holy God. So how we live in this life does matter - it is a response to and reflection of what we believe about Christ.
