9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1)
Tonight, some good friends of mine are having a Kmart reunion Christmas party. For many of us, Kmart brings to mind rushing around a crowded store and hearing the announcement "Attention, Shoppers", letting us know of a "blue-light special" taking place - a great deal we did not want to miss. This Gospel writer lived in that kind of world. He did not take time for the heart-warming story of the infancy of Christ, but jumped right in with his "Announcement" - "Attention Roman Citizens, the Son of God has arrived on the scene! He is the One you have been waiting for! Don't miss out! Come Receive the Best (and first!) Christmas Gift ever!" So, I interrupt you in the hustle and bustle of your shopping, baking, wrapping and partying: Don't be so rushed you miss out on the Who and Why of it all. Stop, Listen, Gaze, Receive, Rejoice.
