5 “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— 16 just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ (Deuteronomy 18:15,16)
Like many of the prophecies of the Old Testament, there was a sense in which Moses' statement here was fulfilled by the other prophets who followed, but later found their ultimate fulfillment in Christ. When Christ came, He was the Word, the one whom God -speaking once again from heaven - said "Here is My Son, listen to Him!" This message was reinforced by the parables of Jesus comparing himself to the prophets who were mistreated when they spoke for God, and then when the son was sent, people plotted to kill him. Why? People don't want to listen to God anymore. As we go through this Advent season, may we hear God crying out above the noise around us, and may we listen to what He is telling us: "Here is My Beloved Son, Listen to Him!"
