In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-4)
As we once again prepare for the celebration of the Incarnation, we need to start right there: it is the Incarnation. The story does not begin with the birth of a baby - there is a panoramic backdrop to the whole story, going back to creation and beyond. The Word - the God Who speaks, Who tells, is also about to Show Himself. He is not some hire hand. He made the creation He is about to enter. He Himself gave life to the lifeless void and light to a world of darkness, so when He comes into the world He has made, we should expect Him to do no less - than to give light and life. In all the business of this month, may we step back, look at the panorama, and gaze in wonder of the Story, and the One Who stars in the show - Christ, our Creator.
