Certainty...

Luke 1:1  Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

Many times, when we get a letter, we cannot wait to get to the body and skim the introduction to find out what the core of the matter is.  We cannot do that here. The important intention of Luke was to give Theophilus certainty.  We live in a world much like that of Luke: people are seeking certainty about what is true, what can be investigated and searched out, organized and arranged, established and depended upon. What I find interesting is that an advertisement on the radio seeks to appeal to this need for certainty by calling upon the listener to contact psycics to find it. The plea is to trust emotions, not evidence; wishful thinking, not wise counsel; an evil source, not an eternal one.  Don't go there; find certainty here.
