23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us)
Diann Cotton, in her book 100 Days with Jesus, picks apart and elaborates on each of those last three words. "God - the perfect and all-powerful spiritual or being that is worshipped as the one who created and rules the universe. With - used to say that people or things are together in one place. Us - people in general." God, creator and sustainer of the universe, came to be with mankind. That overwhelming thought demands some sort of response from us. What we see in the gospels is all sorts of response from worship to rejection to running away into the darkness. What is interesting is how Joseph responded to that news: 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him. His response was obedience. God is with us; may we obey.
