Getting to Know Jesus by Name #55: Lord of Lords

I Timothy 6:13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
As we have seen before, in his final charge to Timothy Paul piled up these names for Jesus including Lord of Lords.  A lord is a "person who has authority, control, or power over others; a master or ruler; a title given to God or Jesus Christ."*  During His ministry on earth, Christ's followers called Him Lord more and more, but after His sacrificial death, burial, resurrection and ascension, He became known for Who He really is: Lord of all Lords. The sentence does not end here, as Paul goes on to say "who alone" - He is the only One: He rises above all others in every perfection. He is the One worthy to have authority over all.
