Getting to Know Jesus by Name #49: Lion

Revelation 5: 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Yesterday we looked at Jesus as the Lamb; today we look at what we would consider the opposite: the Lion.  A Lion, when used to describe a person, means: "A person of outstanding interest or importance; a very important, powerful, or successful person; a wild cat that had golden brown fur."*  Once again, the use of the article indicates that Christ is the person of importance and power, and He has been successful at accomplishing the greatest feat of all: conquering sin, death, and hell.  This indeed makes him worthy of worship and thanksgiving as the only One able to do this, and the only One worthy to open the scroll.
