John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John the Apostle uses many names and pictures to show use Christ, but the one He begins with is The Light. For us, light is so every day we do not fully appreciate the impact of what John was saying. We see lights everywhere we go: from our ceilings to magnificent cityscapes to the little power indicators on our gadgets. They are everywhere. All we do is flick a switch and we have instant light, until the power goes out. Light is: "Something that makes vision possible; the brightness produced by the sun, by fire, by lamp."* It requires a power source and something (or Someone) to connect that power. As John goes on to show, Light reveals Truth, and without Truth, there is no life. Indeed, without the Light we would have no life at all: physical or spiritual.. So, when John calls Jesus the Light, he really is turning the switch on.
