Getting to Know Jesus by Name #41: Intercessor

Hebrews 7:23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
The big word in Hebrews is Better. Jesus is infinitely better than all who have gone before Him: men, angels, or systems of worship. He is also the better Intercessor. An intercessor is one who offers: "prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of another; who pleads for the needs of someone else; mediates."* All of the priests before Him, who offered up sacrifices and prayers on behalf of God's people, died.  They died because they were not sinless, not perfect.  Having risen and ascended back to the Father, Jesus is in a totally unique position. He is able to intercede for us in a way no other ever could: He knows what it is like to live as man; He sees things from both perspectives - heaven and earth; He will never leave his post unattended, forever.  He is able to save, and He is always available for us to call out to Him.  What is holding us back?
