1 John 5:4-5 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
Everybody wants to be a winner. But how can we be? More importantly, what does it mean to win? In the Christian life, winning, having victory, is not giving in to the world and it's lies. John earlier talked about the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. These are all the false ideas that are promoted as worth pursuing, which in fact are enslaving and make us losers. So how do we have victory? Is it on our own strength? Do we just need "more faith"? Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2 that even our faith is a gift. It is a gift we receive when we are born again, when we realize and trust in Jesus as God the Son, come to earth to be our sinless sacrifice. Our only hope for "winning" is Christ. We cannot sing "Faith is the Victory" without singing "Victory in Jesus." May we see signs of victory today as we hope and trust in HIM.
