Our Hearts on Trial...

1 John 5:9-12 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
The big question in the background of John's letter is "can we be sure?"  Can we be sure that what we believe is right? Can we be sure that our relationship with God, the Christian life, and everything we have come to rest our lives in, is real?  John's answer is: "We can." We can if there is enough evidence.  Three marks that it is real are what we believe about Christ, whether we obey what HE has commanded, and if we love as He loves us.   Beyond that evidence is the testimony introduced in the court of our hearts.  What does the Holy Spirit say?  What does God say?  If the Son is in our lives, He will have His say.  There is a whole lot of testimony going on here to confirm our suspicions - we have received eternal life.
