2 John 1:9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
We all know the picture - you take your kids to the zoo or amusement park, or some other place to which they had never been before. The parents are in relax mode - take it all in; enjoy the day; be with one another on the journey. But the kids are ready to run -they want to experience it all, NOW, and they don't want to wait. Every new sight must be explored, and that event on down the road looks and sounds so exciting. They run on ahead. But they do not know the path, and they are set on doing it themselves, without the family. If they are let go, they will get off course, divide the family, and possibly enter a place of fear or danger. That is John's spiritual concern here. Running ahead is running away. Going after "every new thing" spiritual is dangerous. Christ intends us to walk together as a family, His church, talking and enjoying the experience of following Him, not running ahead on our own.
