II Kings 1:2 Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, “Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness.”3 But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?
Israel was a mess during the days of Elijah. God sent His messenger to Elijah to have him be the messenger to the king: "What on earth are you doing!?!" At the time of John the Baptist and Jesus Israel was a mess again. Many had given up looking for the Messiah, and were turning elsewhere for hope. Christ came to turn them, and us, Godward, and He again used angels and an Elijah-like man, John the Baptist, to get things going. But He went further. He sent His Son to turn heads and turn hearts back to Him. Whatever kind of mess we are (and we are...), let Advent be a time we turn our hearts and our eyes back to Him, away from all the distractions that promise to fulfill and to save. He alone is Savior.
