Exodus 3:2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
God is a God of fire and bright lights. He did it here; He did it in the hills surrounding Bethlehem, He did it to Paul on the road to Damascus. We often say that if God were to give us a neon sign we would look and listen, but our true response would and should be the same as here and those other occasions: fear, reverence for Holy God, Who has come to us. He shines in our darkness. Deep down we may also fear the next step: "Moses, you're the man." "Shepherds, go and tell." "Saul, I have many things for you to suffer." When Christ comes to shed some light, it is to be shared and sometimes suffered for. But we need the light, and the plan and purpose of God, and the most worthy purpose of our lives, is found in receiving His light, lighting the way for others, and letting it shine in our lives. Lord, turn the lights up brightly!
