Judges 6:7 When the people of Israel cried out to the Lord on account of the Midianites, 8 the Lord sent a prophet to the people of Israel. And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery. 9 And I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land. 10 And I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.’ But you have not obeyed my voice.”
During the days of the judges in Israel, over and over again the people would cry out to God when they fell into the hands of oppressive people. Over and over again God would send a deliverer to get them out of the mess, only to have them turn away from Him again, get in a mess, and repeat the process. They never really did seem to learn their lesson. When Christ came at His first advent, things were similar but strikingly different. His people were under the iron hand of Rome, far from being a stellar witness for the sovereignty of God. People were crying out for God to send the Messiah. But rather than coming to choose a guy like Gideon or Samson or Othniel, God sent His Son. In addition to reminding them that they had sinned and needed to repent, He provided them, and us, with an ongoing solution to our "cycle of sin" - Him. Christ within provides us the will and ability to live a life that shows He has come. He delivers! Let's receive Him.
