II Corinthians 8 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.
Paul has written warning after warning to these people about the things that rip them apart: selfishness, sensuality, spectacularism. But he also feels free to poiont them to other churches that are "doing it right." They are giving, and doing so generously. By comparison, these churches had nothing near to the problems the church at Corinth did. Yes, no church if perfect, but a little giving goes a long way. These other areas had nothing like Corinth did in the way of resources (or modern day America), but they had a heart to give towards others who had even less. Like with the rich young ruler, Christ calls on us to examine our hearts. Are we anything like the Good Samaritan - not only as individuals, but as a Church body. Do we long to give, and thus show the Love of Christ?
