"I'm drowning here!!!"

Psalm 88English Standard Version (ESV)

I Cry Out Day and Night Before You

A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil[a] of Heman the Ezrahite.

88 LordGod of my salvation,
    cry out day and night before you.
Let my prayer come before you;
    incline your ear to my cry!
For my soul is full of troubles,
    and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am a man who has no strength,
like one set loose among the dead,
    like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom you remember no more,
    for they are cut off from your hand.
You have put me in the depths of the pit,
    in the regions dark and deep.
Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
    and you overwhelm me with all your wavesSelah
The Psalmist is overwhelemed.  That's putting it mildly. He senses God's hand heavy upon him.  His tears are so great in sorrow he's drowing in them.  He's down in the pit, with no apparent way out.  He's doing the right thing: calling out to God, helpless and seeking. There are so many other things we do: pick up rocks from the bottom of the pit and throw them at God, as if that will help.  Or start gifuing out ways we can get ourselves out, so we can prove God made a mistake.  Or curse God and curl up and die, wallowing in self-pity, based on self-righteousness.  If you find yourself in the pit today, call out to Him.  He can see you and hear  you there, and in fact, He is waiting to answer and pull you out. There is not need to doubt, despair, drown, or do anything else dumb.  Cry out!
