John 14:16-18 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
At the beginning of this chapter Jesus has made a disturbing announcement: He is going away and they cannot go with Him. They are devastated: "After all that has been said and done, this is it?" They felt abandoned. But they had not listened to the full message. He was going to prepare a place for us, and would come back and receive us to that place. He was not abandoning them, or us. As a sign of that promise, He was sending His Spirit, Who would comfort them in the grief of His going, and Who would actually be their Representative to confirm their Adoption process. They were not going to be orphans at all, just adoptees awaiting the final day when they could go to their Father's house. There are no orphans of God.
