"It seems good to me... and the Holy Spirit"

Acts 15:22-29 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers, with the following letter: “The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”
Sometimes a word or phrase seems to jump off the pages of scripture as we read.  Here in this passage we twice find this phrase: "Seemed good".  There is this consensus of opinion, this oneness of heart among God's people and with the Holy Spirit.  As believers we should be all for things "done in order" as Paul says in I Corinthians 14, but sometimes that orderliness is more of a coming to consensus than it is a formal business meeting with voting.  These believers had seen the Spirit at work in their church and the spread of the Gospel to the Gentiles.  They were witnessing and being a part of what God was doing in joining together Jew and Gentile into the church.  In the spirit of the Unity of the Spirit, they wanted to see that process go as seamlessly as possible, and came to oneness of mind in the instructions they gave.  It is important to note that their concern was what was best for these new believers.  This was not "do this and you will have our approval", but "this is the way that will please God and bring His blessing. "  May we learn to become more and more of one heart and mind in this way, and all we do seem good to the Holy Spirit.
