James 1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
Our natural, sinful tendency when we sin is to run and hide. We need look no furhter for Genesis 3 for that. We look in the mirror, turn away, and hope that being away from the mirror changes things. But it does not. That is no way to use the mirror of God's truth. But there is a hope, a blessing, a contrast here. If we will look in the mirror, see the truth of our disobedience, and trust in God to make the necessary changes, we can come through the experience cleaned up and confident to stand before the mirror of truth. In other words, there is hope for forgiveness, cleansing, and freedom from guilt. Don't turn away from the mirror. Take a good, hard look. Ask God for a makeover, whatever it takes. Wait and see the transformation He begins.
