5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,
“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”
(Hebrews 13)
As the writer is closing this letter on how Christ is better than all who have come before, he gives a series of practical exhortations. This one has to do with the fear of not having enough. Even in this culture of abundant wealth, most people are driven by a fear that some day, some time, they will not have enough, so they better get as much as they can today, with no regard to how it affects others. The problem with that is the same as Jesus pointed out to the young man: it causes us to love and trust in money instead of loving and trusting God. We give into a fear that ignores the character of God - that holds us captive to materialism, instead of a contentment and confidence that frees us to live for God. So, like in so many instances in scripture, God says: Stop being afraid. Trust in God; He will both protect you from the enemy and provide what you need.
