Isaiah 30:15 For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,
“In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”
But you were unwilling, 16 and you said,
“No! We will flee upon horses”;
therefore you shall flee away;
and, “We will ride upon swift steeds”;
therefore your pursuers shall be swift.
17 A thousand shall flee at the threat of one;
at the threat of five you shall flee,
till you are left
like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain,
like a signal on a hill.
When the going gets tough, the not-so-tough often run away. Thus was the history of Israel during the prophets. Actually, often in their history they wanted to "go back to Egypt." God had called them to live in the promised land, stay there, and keep His covenant. He often talked to them about entering their rest. It was not always running back to Egypt; it included fleeing other places instead of trusting and obeying Him. Do you find yourself often wanting to run away? From consequences, from obedience, from God? Return to Him in humble, quiet obedience and trust. Join with others in trusting Him, lest you find yourself alone and more vulnerable than ever.
