The Lord Said: "Good News?"

Isaiah 39: 5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord of hosts: 6 Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the Lord. 7 And some of your own sons, who will come from you, whom you will father, shall be taken away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” 8 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “There will be peace and security in my days.”

We talked yesterday about Hezekiah begging God for a longer life, and God granting that request. This led to him living to see some promises fulfilled, but also some things he probably would rather have not seen. Here we find an interesting interaction. God announces through Isaiah the coming exile and submission of Israel to Babylon.  Hezekiah has an interesting response: he sees it as good news because at least things would be good in his lifetime.  How often do we have that perspective in life? As long as it does not get in the way of my plans, my comfort, my happiness.  Thankfully, Isaiah does not leave Hezekiah or us in such a sad state. The rest of this book goes on to give comfort, hope, and good news in the coming of the Messiah. There is so much more than my little plans. God has great things ahead for His people.
