17 So Jacob arose and set his sons and his wives on camels. 18 He drove away all his livestock, all his property that he had gained, the livestock in his possession that he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac. 19 Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father's household gods. 20 And Jacob tricked Laban the Aramean, by not telling him that he intended to flee. 21 He fled with all that he had and arose and crossed the Euphrates, and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead. (Genesis 31)
Jacob had been tricked by his father-in-law. Now he tried to trick him by slipping out the back door. His wife Rachel was also doing some deceiving of her own - hanging on to the idols of her father's household, sneaking them in a sack. All of us are worthy of examination before God. Are we content? With the spouse we have, the in-laws we have, how hard we have had to work? But beyond that, are we content with our lot in life, all the blessings God gives (and God had given Jacob a ton...)? Whenever we make the slightest deception, we give away the discontentment in our heart. Whenever we compare, complain or try to con God, others, and even ourselves, our lack of contentment becomes apparent. Today, may we let God, and all He has done and given, be enough.
