I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae,2 that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well. (Romans 16)
As Paul closes his letter, he has a long list of people for whom He is thankful. As he describes them, it gives us a point for self-examination: Am I this kind of person? Not that we all are the same or gifted the same, but is there anything commendable by which we bless others? Phoebe was - not because she stood out as a leader or a brilliant mind or dazzling beauty, but because she served others. May that be said of all of us: that we be known as servants, and be recommended by others as such.
