Surrounded by Good Company

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. (Hebrews 12)
As Jesus was teaching his disciples about prayer, he challenged them to persist in prayer and not lose heart. Because of Who Christ is, what He has done, and the fact that He is in the Father's presence interceding for us, we have good reason to not lose heart.  Beyond that, not only are we surrounded by God and His loving care (see yesterday's blog), we are also surrounded by fellow believers - past and present - in calling out to Him. We run not alone. We pray not alone.  Christ has done so before us; heroes of the faith like in Hebrews 11 have done so; now we run with others surrounding us - that at times we seem all alone on the course. Let us not grow weary; let us not lose heart; let us run the race, calling out to the One who has run before to prepare a place there.
