Psalm 114:7,8 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.
Psalm 115:1-3: Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name give glory, for the sake of Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness! Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases.
The first psalm above begins with the writer reciting God’s great deliverance of Israel from Egypt and the Red Sea “running away” in fear from God. This same God drew from solid rock the water needed to refresh His people. Lest they begin to feel self-righteous or self-supporting, the psalmist immediately in the next psalm reminds them that God does all this. He then contrasts the “gods”, the idols of the surrounding nations, which do not speak, see, hear, smell, feel, or walk. They are not to be feared or trusted, because they cannot do anything. The LORD is the only One who is worthy of our trust; the earth and heaven belong to Him, and our part is just a trust from Him.
