13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. (I John 5)
If we had to choose 1 word to describe this letter, it would be confidence. John wants us to know a number of things, without doubting. James gives us the practical considerations of why not to doubt; John gives us the theological and emortional ones. We can have assurance of salvation and confidence in prayer because we are asking in the name - by the authority and account of, the Son. We have no reason to doubt God's promise to save us by faith, nor do we have reason to doubt He will hear us when we pray. Satan would love to have us doubt, and therefore not pray. Pray away. Be delivered from doubt.
