Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but he who hates reproof is stupid...
10
Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast,
but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.
11
Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread,
but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.
12
Whoever is wicked covets the spoil of evildoers,
but the root of the righteous bears fruit...
17
Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence,
but a false witness utters deceit.
(Proverbs 12:1,10-12,17)
"Stupid is as stupid does..." So goes the Proverbial wisdom of Forrest Gump. We have been warned by psychologists not to call people stupid, lest we damage their egos, but Solomon shows no such restrain. For him "stupid" = "foolish", a choosing of one's own ill-informed paths instead of God's wise path. Another evidence of foolishness is a lack of mercy - even when it comes to animals - a disregard for the value of life, which reveals a deeper disregard for the Giver of life. Laziness, lust and lying round out the description of stupidity here in this chapter. It seems to be a package deal, though any individual may have some characteristics which are more prominent. Whoever. May it not be you.
