16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

20 My son, keep your father's commandment,
and forsake not your mother's teaching.
21 Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you.
and forsake not your mother's teaching.
21 Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you.
(Proverbs 6)
There is so much in this chapter, as there is in all the chapters of this book, so don't just start or stop with the verses chosen each day. These verses come from the center, the core of the chapter, and get to the heart of God - not by focusing on what God loves, but what He hates. They are all the "wrong way" signs we will receive when we get off of God's path. The first two are Satan's best known quality characteristics - pride and lying. When we see those in our lives (and we often can be blinded to them), it is like a wrong way sign with flashing red lights above and below: Stop! Turn Around!. These soon are surrounded by a heartlessness for others and a heart bent on destructive behavior - both in our lives, and toward those around us. Sadly, when we get a hint that we are on the path, rather than stopping to admit we are on the wrong path and turning around, we run all the faster the way we are heading, thinking we will again come to the light, but the path just gets darker. Feeling all alone, misery loves company, so we act like everyone else is the problem, and we do all we can to discredit them with lying and gossip. The chapter goes on to call us back to the light, the lamp of God's Word and way. Today is always the day to do so.
