One Whole Body

For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. (1 Corinthians 12:14-20 ESV)
When Paul uses the imagery of the Body for the Church, with gifted members as its parts, he addresses a number of issues. Because of selfishness and arrogance in the church at Corinth, some had come to think of themselves as less, because they did not have showy gifts. No one is unnecessary, especially the unseen ones - the are the guts of the body, the vital organs. He says something similar in Romans 12, addressing those who they thought they were God's greatest gifts, who really did not need the others. The goal is to have a Whole Body - spiritual healthy with every member doing his/her part, and enjoying the Spirit of the Lord as we see God work in and through us. Let's open our eyes and ears, take a big whiff of God's Wind, and get our heart pumping to be the Body of Christ today.
