46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. 47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things." (Luke 23)
They all saw the same thing: Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of the world. Reactions were very varied. Leading Luke's headlines were this centurion who had seen a lot of guilty men die: this was no guilty Man. His pronouncement was true. The crowds had a response that something terrible had happened, but exactly what it meant to them was unclear: was it terrible He had died, or was it terrible what He had done? And His followers were left watching and wondering what all this meant. That is fine for a time. God often leaves us that way. But Sunday is coming. The "not guilty" Man will be acquitted. The "not sure who this Guy is" will rise. The Lord and Savior will be seen again. What a day that will be!
