4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” 6 Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
Often times, in the bad times of life, we can come to God and not know what to say. Usually a safe place to begin is "I have sinned", or corporately "we have sinned." It is often the beginning of the change that we need. It does not mean that there will be no consequences of our sin (e.g. Achan), but it does get us into talking terms with God. It is often our sin that gets us into a mess, and, if we are not careful, we can make a bigger mess of our situation by a sinful reaction to our circumstances. Sometimes, to our surprise, God will show us "that is not what is going on here," as He reveals what we cannot see, but that is okay, because it gets the conversation going, the change begins, and we are drawn closer in our walk and talk with God. So, if you don't know how to begin your conversation with God today, begin here and see where it takes you: "Good morning Lord, I have sinned." Now listen.
