Luke 24:44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
We have become quite conditioned in our culture to series of movies and TV shows, which raise questions which demand answers, only to leave us hanging till next week, or next year, or whenever the next "chapter" is presented. Luke's gospel stands well alone as a history, but we find in Jesus' last quoted address here key words that will arise in Volume 2: "The Acts of the Apostles". He has told them a lot about His fulfilling of Old Testament prophesies; in volume two we will see them figuring them out. They are to be his witnesses, but they will not be alone. The "promise" the Father has given will be sent, and He will be the one who gives them the power needed to carry out their task, and be able to understand and explain to the world how Christ fits into History. So we are left with questions: "Who will lead? How will this promise be fulfilled? How will the message be received?" It's enough to keep us going and read to find out!
