23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” (Matthew 8)
The disciples had been following Jesus on dry land. If a problem arose, they could turn around and walk away. They saw themselves as unlike the people Jesus had just called who refused to give up all to follow Him. Jesus then got on a boat. For many of them, as fisherman, this was not viewed as a big problem - they thought they could handle following Jesus there; they were "experts" in this kind of life. But the worst happened; the worst storm they could have experienced. Such storms can happen quickly on the Sea of Galilee. They cried out to the Land Lubber to save them. What? Yes, they trusted Him more than themselves. He answered. They wondered. Do we expect Christ to save us? Do we think we can follow Him anywhere that He cannot handle? Do we trust Him, call out to Him, and most of all, stand in awe of Him?
