Lesson 7: Doubting God's Promises

But Elisha said, “Hear the word of the Lord: thus says the LordTomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.” Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God, “If the Lord himself should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” But he said, “You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.” (II Kings 7)
Skeptical.  That word describes so many of us so well so often.  The people of Israel were under seige at the hand of the king of Syria, again.  Famine was rampant. The people were losing hope. The capital was surrounded by the enemy.  And Elisha makes this insane promise: "Food will be cheap tomorrow." "How in the world? It would take a miracle and more!" the captain of the army says.  Elisha then gave him a personal promise: He would see it but not eat it. After all, seeing is "believing" in this world in which we live; trusting, however, results in change - going from starving to feasting - and this many had no faith. If you go to the end of the chapter you will find the fulfillment, after God does indeed scatter the Syrian army, who leave all their stuff behind - including food for an army.  As for the captain? He saw and heard, but did not eat.  God invites us to come and eat at His table today.  Will you?
