Seeing my place in God's plan
And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
(Matthew 10:1-4 ESV)
As Matthew records the preparation for his first road trip without Jesus, he has a clear perspective on who he is in God's plan. First, he realizes that Christ did not give him all authority. He and his comrades had been given limited authority. It was an awesome privilege to be among the select few, but he knew he was not the one with all the authority Christ had demonstrated. Secondly, Matthew puts himself in the middle of the pack. He was not a standout at either end like Peter or Judas Iscariot. And he was okay with that. He rejoiced that he was a part of the kingdom, a member of the team, a part of what God was doing. Can we see where and how we fit in to God's plan? Are we okay with that?
