Don't be the "but"

Nehemiah 3:3 The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate. They laid its beams and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars. And next to them Meremoth the son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz repaired. And next to them Meshullam the son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel repaired. And next to them Zadok the son of Baana repaired. And next to them the Tekoites repaired, but their nobles would not stoop to serve their Lord.
Nehemiah is a fascinating account of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem after their exile by Babylon.  It is a record full of vision, courage, hard work, and community, as all the people jumped on board, doing their part. Everyone but... a certain group of people.  Besides those who were from surrounding nations who did everything possible to block the building, there were a select group of snobs who were unwilling to put themselves in danger or get their hands dirty.  It is a sad fact that whenever there is something of value, something God, something pleasing to God taking place, there is at least one person or group who refuses to participate.  Don't be that one.  Thought the majority is not always right, there are times, like this one, that it is clear that "the hand of God is upon it," and that all should participate and support it. When we do not, we are simply being selfish. Don't be the "but...".
